About Gold Megaways
Gold Megaways is a six-reel game running the Megaways system patented by Big Time Gaming, the Sydney studio that created the mechanic. The principle fits in one sentence: the number of symbols displayed on each reel changes every spin, between two and seven, and the number of ways to win is the product of those six heights. Six reels of seven symbols give 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7, or 117,649 — the figure printed on hundreds of licensed Megaways games from Pragmatic Play, Blueprint, Red Tiger and Relax Gaming. What those licensees reproduce is the standard formula. What Big Time Gaming does here is exceed it.
The studio states on its official game page that the free spins in Gold Megaways reach up to 1,000,000 ways to win. The arithmetic is the same: ten symbols per reel, 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000,000. The mechanism that gets you there is the Expansion Symbol. During free spins, every Expansion Symbol that lands is removed and replaced by two new symbols, adding one position to that reel. When a reel hits its ceiling of ten symbols, two things happen at once: eight extra free spins are awarded, and every Wild landing on that reel becomes a x3 Wild.
The feature opens on a wheel. When free spins trigger, it reveals the starting number of Megaways, somewhere between 14,000 and 117,649 according to Big Time Gaming. Landing on 14,000 means starting with a grid stripped of more than eight tenths of its combinations; landing on 117,649 means starting already at the standard format's maximum. That opening lottery gets very little attention despite deciding much of what the feature will be worth. The base game runs on reactions: winning symbols are removed, new ones drop in to replace them, and the chain continues as long as a win keeps forming.
Win Exchange is the other centrepiece. Big Time Gaming describes two regimes. Above 70x stake, the player can exchange 70x for 12 free spins and keep the rest of the win. Between 20x and 70x, the player can exchange the entire win for a chance at those same 12 spins, with the probability shown in green on a wheel. In the first case the cost is fixed at 70x, always, whether you won 71x or 400x.
