About Birthday
Birthday — written "Birthday!" on the ELK Studios site — arrived in March 2019, before the studio pivoted towards very high volatility games. The official data sheet publishes a 96.3% RTP, volatility rated 5 out of 10, a hit frequency of 16.7% and exposure of 5,000x the bet, which is a €250,000 maximum win at the top stake.
Two corrections were needed here. The BetsRank database carried a 95.7% RTP; ELK's own data sheet states 96.3%, a figure VegasSlotsOnline and BigWinBoard both repeat, and that is now the stored value. The bet range was wrong too: ELK publishes €0.10 to €50, not €0.20 to €100. Both corrections matter in practice, because the 5,000x ceiling is calculated on the stake.
The grid runs five reels across four rows. ELK describes "connecting paylines" generating 178 ways to win; the data sheet simply writes "Paylines: 178". It is the same 178-combination engine as Lake's Five, released two years earlier.
The game rests on three families of features, all randomly triggered, with no scatter symbol to collect. Happy Spins are respins whose exit condition depends on which character delivers them. According to BigWinBoard, the Camel respins until three to five wins land, Mr Lake until a five-of-a-kind hits, the Matador until the chosen symbol pays, Anne Bonny until a win of at least 15x the bet arrives, and Electric Sam electrifies a symbol that stays sticky as long as it keeps appearing. The logic is worth noting: these respins have no fixed length, they run until an objective is met.
Free spins arrive when Maggie rings the doorbell, awarding 10 spins that can be retriggered. Two wild types are exclusive to that round: sticky wilds placed by Soundtech, and walking wilds brought by Blooper, which shift one column left each spin until they leave the screen. ELK states on its official page that Happy Spins combine with both free spins and wilds, and that free spins can freeze or queue in the player's favour while another feature finishes. That is the game's real signature: features do not cancel each other, they stack.
A 96.3% RTP means €3.70 of house margin per €100 wagered. Across the 33 ELK games held in the BetsRank database, that puts Birthday near the top, level with Hong Kong Tower, Lake's Five, Sam on the Beach and Joker Gems, and just behind Wild Toro at 96.4%. The studio's recent generation — Tropicool 2 through 5, Cygnus 2 through 6, Avalon Gold — has dropped to 94%, or €6.00 of margin. Over 1,000 spins at €1, that separates €37 of expected loss from €60.
One point deserves flagging: the sources disagree on volatility. ELK rates it 5 out of 10 on the official sheet, while BigWinBoard classes it 7 out of 10. The 16.7% hit frequency, roughly one winning spin in six, leans towards BigWinBoard's reading: that is markedly less frequent than Tropicool 3's 28.0%. We store the official figure and flag the disagreement. Finally, Birthday predates the X-iter system: no bonus buy is offered, which leaves the game available as-is in the United Kingdom.
